  20. Optimizing a Server Hard drive
  21.  
  22. During the day to day work on your computer, files are deleted,
  23. rewritten, or replaced on the hard disk.  This will eventually
  24. cause your files to be "fragmented".  Fragmented refers to a file
  25. being divided into pieces and those pieces being located
  26. throughout your hard diskinstead of in one contiguous block of
  27. disk space.  Thus if you try and access one of these files the
  28. hard disk has to look for a single file in several places.  This
  29. in turn causes your hard disk to respond slowly.  The more
  30. fragmented your disk is, the slower it will respond.  If the hard
  31. disk is in a NetWare Lite server the entire network can be
  32. affected.  To eliminate this effect consider "optimizing" you
  33. hard disk.  A disk is optimized by rearranging the data so that
  34. files are not spread out over the disk.  There are many different
  35. utilities availible for optimizing hard disks.

  38.       It is vital that no other stations access your hard disk
  39.       while the utility is running.
  40.  
  41.       Disk Optimizers can take a considerable amount of time to
  42.       complete data arrangement. (20 minutes or more)

  44.       It is recommended that you have a backup of your vital
  45.       information before optimizing.
  46.  
  47.       If your hard disk is in a NetWare Lite server, the
  48.       optimizing utility must be executed from the server itself
  49.       and not from a client.
